A number of local schools were amalgamated at Het Rhedens, the new school complex in Dieren. The art work assignment for this building was as follows: to produce a dynamic art piece in the assembly hall which students can relate to directly and which stimulates communication between the various departments and disciplines.
The comprehensive school is divided into three large departments: the lower school for all sections, the senior section which is called the VMBO (pre-vocational secondary education) and the HAVO/VWO (senior general secondary and pre-university education). The first two departments are housed together at the new complex in Dieren and the third department remains at Rozendaal, 12 km away. All three departments have alternate breaks, so that while one department is on their break, the other two are at their lessons.
In my proposal, students from each department carry on a conversation with each other while at their lessons; this conversation can be viewed by the students on a break via text displays in the assembly hall where they are congregated. With HI, I aim to create a sort of transparency in the school by connecting students from the different departments together in real-time, and by making this connection visible for others via the written language of the students themselves.

In the assembly halls at both complexes, electronic text-displays are placed at two opposite, protruding walls, which makes them visible from every position in the halls. The displays consist of letters 15 cm high, and a sentence is displayed over a length of 8 metres.
Each week, as allocated on the roster, two classes from different departments assign two students who, during every break - 3 times a day, 5 days per week - carry on a conversation about the lesson they are sitting that moment. These same students are free - maybe just once a year - to observe their class, to some extent detached from the lesson, and to communicate with each other about this via laptops that are connected to the school network. Each three departments have their own laptop. The text messages between both students appear in real-time on the displays in different colours. The third laptop is located elsewhere in the building, which means that someone might butt in on the conversation unexpectedly.

The focal point for the chats is the department, the class and the lesson where the text writers are present, and can give rise to descriptions of the lesson proper, the class and the atmosphere. In other words, a kind of subjective real-time report on the lesson in the form of a conversation. In that sense, it becomes possible for students in the assembly hall to get an interesting or amusing image of what is going on simultaneously in the other departments.
Since the chats are conducted during each break in accordance with a strict timetable, they can become a fixed part of daily life at school and, since the writing class is identified in each case, what is being written is subject to some degree of social control. The fixed agenda also means that at times, chats may be nice or interesting, at other times boring or irritating. So people won't feel compelled to look at the displays; they just happen to be there, like any other art piece, to be glanced at on occasion, or to be ignored. The art piece should become nothing more or less than the visualisation of an organised, constant stream of energy within the school.
