Doorzicht
The Culture Mile is a project of Enschede council. The route through the city begins at the old market and runs via the new Muziekkwartier and the Rijksmuseum Twente to the culture cluster in the rebuilt former industrial area Roombeek.
Performancelab - Mariëlle Videler – was commissioned to organize performances along the route on four Saturdays.
Doorzicht / View is an attempt to make the Culture Mile transparent.
It is impossible, at any point, to see far into the distance, because of bends in the roads, buildings, trees and traffic.
Doorzicht / View is principally a project about space, the city space of the Culture Mile.
The project is strongly connected to the architectonic design of the city. The Culture Mile cuts right through a number of very different areas.
Two people, who are connected by telephone at continually changing points along the line, give descriptions of their view and in doing so verbally chart the line in images.
The sound from the telephones is amplified and made audible through a small loudspeaker each performer holds in their hand. In turn, both performers give a sentence from their descriptions.
The public can listen to the descriptions and form for themselves an image of the view from a different point along the line.
I was assisted, in these descriptions, by artists Miriam Reeders, Gabriëlle Barros Martins, Katharina D.Martin and art historian Guus Vreeburg.
On the last of the 4 Saturdays my assistants and I remained at one point in the middle of the line and we asked passers-by the give their descriptions from another point of the line. The passers-by gave us their telephone numbers and we called them later.
