crossing 2019
Crossing is a group performance, based on the sound-wave of a passing airplane.
In the way the sound of a passing airplane develops from nothing to room-filling and than disappears into nothing again, a group of performers on one side of the space gradually forms a line that bridges the space and dissolves on the other side.
During the crossing the performers simultaneously speak a text which describes the sound of a passing airplane.
Crossing took place earlier in 1984 in art space Ennu foundation (now PARK) in the former chapel of Maria Goretti in Tilburg.
It consisted of a group of performers crossing the space in a severe movement, together with an electronic sound-composition by Ton Bruynél and an adjustable closing/opening of daylight in the space.
Over the years my work as an artist has become more sober and is more focused on the voice and spoken word as medium for the expression of energy. I developed a remake of Crossing which is based on the description of the sound of a passing airplane, vocalised by the performers.
This text also forms the score for the movement of the group.
The text consists of 120 sentences, the performance is basically executed by 20 performers, each of them vocalising 2 x 3 sentences.Together they form a line at mutual distances that are dependent on the length of the space.
- no special skills are required and people of all ages are welcome to perform this work.
- no technical equipment is used, there is just people, voices and the space.
- no texts need to be learned by heart.
- there will be two work-meetings.
- the performances take place during the day, the space lit by daylight.
- the crossing is performed twice: firstly by the group of performers, for the second
crossing visitors will be invited to accompany one of the performers.
