real space/real time
I sit in the completely dark and silent cellar with a group of visitors.
Via headphones I listen to the latest news broadcast of BBC-World Service while trying to speak along with the news reader with as little delay as possible for me.
The duration of the news-broadcasts is 5 minutes, preceded by a one-minute introduction in which I don't speak and which is more or less audible for the audience, leaking from the headphones.
At some moments my speech is a fluent imitation of the news reader's words, accent and intonation. At other moments I completely get lost in the stream of words.

further information | Seven artists were invited by the festival to present a sound work in an old cellar in the center of Dordrecht. The works were going to be visited by groups in a route called Cellar Noises: Nico Parlevliet, Pierre Bastien, Ricardo Huisman, Margriet Kick-ass, Mark Bain, Hannes Wallrafen en myself.
My cellar was at Voorstraat 142, one of the oldest in Dordrecht.
The extreme seclusion of the cellar due to its complete darkness and silence, challenged me to perform as a medium between this ancient and isolated space and currently running events in the world.
An internet connection was installed in order to receive the real time world news as broadcasted by BBC-World Service.
During the festival-day 8 groups visited the cellar. |
