Mei, geluid van vogels....
My contribution tot the Slibreeks consists of two one-hour minute-grids, in which I describe the sounds of birds in a period of the year in which the energy of the birds is at its peak.
The location for my observations was the head of the Island Schouwen, an area where the beach meets the bush.
In order to be able to approach sound as autonomous energy, I stripped my language of the styles and tools which are often used in describing sound: sound imitating words, words derived from seeing, words conveying human feelings, poetic / expressive phrases, technical sound and musical terms, similes and metaphors.
Wherever possible, I replaced words of Latin or French origins with words that I felt were more descriptive in nature.
These restrictions and interventions were important in my attempt to come closer to the fundamental nature of both language and sound through listening and writing.

I stand on a path in the North dune at the head of the isle of Schouwen in Zeeland.
The path winds its way through the dunes towards the beach.
I look into the dune valley wich lies south of me. On the south and west side it is edged by high dunes. From the west I hear the surf of the North sea.
Easterly, behind me, is the forest, with coniferous and deciduous trees. Near me and in the valley the earth is covered with shrubbery.
In an hour the sun will rise.
When cycling to this location the air was clear, now it is overcast, I can see only one star.
In the valley is a thick layer of mist.
I can just see the dark edge of the hills looming up from the mists on the other side.
When the sounds in my surrounding are less, I can hear the traffic on the bridge in the distance, south east.
I concentrate on the sounds coming from the valley. Sometimes I turn to the east and listen to the sounds coming from the forest.

Slowly light is rising in the east.
I did not expect to experience so much activity already: vivid sounds arousing from the mist below.

I specially hear short lived active sounds in pulses, sounds in compositions which can result in motivs and patterns. Sometimes they repeat themselves in series of which the units follow so quick after eachother that it sounds as vibrating or rolling.

I hear a multiplicity of sounds, in a variety of motifs, often as repeated hard beats of sound.
Sequences of rapidly changing tones, which often differ in height.
I hear the murmer of the sea, but the mist does not allow me to see her.

Tones varying very quickly in tone, a short sequence, than a moment of silence, than again, this time in a different pattern and order. Sometimes, in the silences in between, I hear softly a comparable sound from the distance.
Sometimes I hear them as a sequence of clear tones, then again as one toneless sound.
I can clearly distinguish the various sound sources.
