rolling 7 Luchtsingel
Rolling 6 (as well as Singelstemmen) has been conceived in response to the invitation by Sculpture International Rotterdam to conclude the International Architecture Biennale with a couple of performances that inaugurate the Luchtsingel (ZUS architects), an alternative architectonic promenade between the Central Station and the former station Hofplein at the Hofbogen.
Rather than focusing on one spot on the trajectory, I took for my performance the entire route as terrain of action, using the yellow line that marks most of the track's course and the different acoustic and public 'spheres' along its way, together with the spatial movements of the line in direction as well as in height.
Half of the route is marked with yellow lines spaced one meter apart. When measuring the entire route in my own one-meter steps I counted 720 meters. This set the idea for a 12 hour (720 = 12 x 60) durational drumming piece,
At noon two drummers with snare drums on tripods are positioned on both the Central Station side as well as the Hofbogen side of the Luchtsingel route. On the drums digital clocks are attached.
Exactly at 12 am. one of the drummers starts an unbroken even drum roll which is continued for one minute.
At the end of the first minute the drummer stops and the second drummer takes over. The first one moves his drums two meters further on the line and starts rolling on the second minute, and so on.
This happens on both sides of the trajectory. At 6 pm. both couples pass each other at exactly the mid point of the route from which point they continue their line in order to reach the other end at midnight.
The two drummers were escorted by two extra drummers who could take over for longer breaks.
