Clouds 9 Ermer
In 1989 I made in Ermer Gallery a sort of cloud field on the 10 meter long wall by drumming for 24 hours on carbon paper with drum sticks. The work evoked associations with movement and time. Now I wanted to again make a wall-drawing as cloud field, with the city (Berlin) as a metaphor for movement and change.
I made slides of old and recent street maps of Berlin. In the gallery a slide was projected onto the wall. The names of streets, squares, canals and rivers were written onto the wall with charcoal. By continually projecting new slides on top of this and by writing names on top of eachother areas of darker and lighter grayness arose which together form soft clouds, but clearly retain the graphic structure of city street maps. This process is continued until a balance is achieved between both of these elements.
