Stream 2
In 1993 I developed the sound installation “Stream I” as part of the group exhibition in Gallery Equilibrist in Sint Niklaas on the theme labyrinth of Knossos (from Ovid's Metamorphoses). In the fragment concerned, from the Metamorphoses, the confusion of the labyrinth is compared to the meandering movement of the river. A part of the text, read in Latin, was recorded onto endless tapes and played in the exhibition space. In the park of castle Bouvigne, I made a variation on this theme by placing a cassette recorder with a small loudspeaker in each of the upper corners of a small romantic summerhouse situated at the water's edge. Each recorder plays an endless tape, on which the same fragment of text from the Metamorphoses, read by the same voice, has been recorded. The texts, played at a low volume and irregularly running through each other, form the sound of softly lapping water, which you as a visitor can listen to while looking out across the castle's lake. Sometimes fragments of the text can be understood.
