Waves 5
Rini van Dijke, a Dutch artist from the province of Zeeland, organized for the local government a project where he invited artists to do a solo installation for one month in the Bewaerschole, a municipal exhibition space.
The starting point for the series of exhibitions, called “Between heaven and earth”, was the special character of the sand dunes at the head of the peninsula Schouwen-Duivenland.
In this area one can clearly see the continuous movement and disappearance of the dunes; old layers appear on the surface and vanish again. In this environment of visible movements, dunes, clouds, and water, I also developed thoughts about immaterial waves, like that of telephone and radio signals – sensitive movements of actuality – the news and the weather.
Installation.
In the exhibition space 12 short-wave receivers are installed on tables. Along the wall are hung enlarged lists of world short-wave stations, with their frequency and capacities. During the opening hours of the installation, member of the radio club “De Bevenlanden” operate the receivers, continually searching for new actuality and news programs on new stations from all over the world, and adjusting them.
The sounds come together in the space, varying from many of just a few stations. Sometimes the reception is bright and clear, and at other times unclear and distorted.
The visitor is able to move through the space and recognize fragments of texts and languages.
The low-volume, high frequency sounds resulted in a soft, continuos changing cloud, that hung in the acoustic space.
