Names, coronal and sagittal sections of torso
I was invited to present a performance at the academy summer workshop given by Marie-Jo Lafontaine. The workshop theme was 'the body' and the term 'academy' also inspired me to a work on a concept involving the naked human figure. I consulted a section atlas as I had done with other works involving Latin terms for parts of the anatomy, in this case pertaining to sectional parts of the female and male torso. The performance took place in the space where Marie-Jo Lafontaine exhibited her photographic work. Performance A large space is divided crosswise by four columns. A male and female figure stand naked in the centre, looking in opposite directions. Slide projectors are located between those columns, and pointing from the four directions towards the center. The slides are transported by voice performers standing at each projector, two woman opposite each other, and two men opposite each other, all of whom recite the various Latin terms at a fixed pitch. The lightlines project sections of the human torso, in the man' s case, the coronal (frontal), and in the female' s, the sagittal (front to back). Each opposite pair of projectors shows the one section. As the lightlines are projected on the torso's, the voice performers recite all the Latin names arising in that particular section, woman' s voices recite the female's, men's voices the male's. This is done in turn by each participant of a pair, whereby the sounds as it were bounce back and forth. When all the terms arising in one section have been recited, the slides for the next section are transported in the projectors, and the names in that section recited. A different pitch is used in the recitation of each section, and the performance ends when all the names have been recited.
