Lokaal
For this project, which is about the connection between language and image, I devised two sound installations which describe and connect the two locations, De Overslag and De Witte Dame: De Overslag is a former gymnasium, soberly converted into an exhibition space, with white-plastered walls and passages with no doors or door-frames, secluded and meditative in character. The rooms in the Witte Dame complex present a more industrial and technological aesthetic: galvanised steel, non-corrosive steel, glass, concrete, aluminium, and hardwood with everywhere a panoramic view to the outside. In both spaces, standing on one point, I gave a two-minute account of the space as it may be experienced in the four wind directions. These observations were recorded on two minute endless tapes. Then I set up in both spaces a small installation consisting of four tripods with loudspeakers connected to walkmen playing the endless tapes. The loudspeakers were facing the four wind directions at ear height. In the Witte Dame - standing between the four loudspeakers - the four descriptions from the Overslag could be heard simultaneously, and those for De Witte Dame could be heard at the Overslag: the visual image of one space being juxtaposed as it were by the translated image of the other space.
