Rolling 5
Situation and plan:
Giannozzo's public space consists of two spaces one on top of the other with dimensions that differ only in height.
The atmospheres are entirely different: the upper space is white and light and has extremely vivid acoustics while the lower one is dark and does not reverberate.
There is a staircase between the two spaces with an open stairwell.
My plan was to create an installation-like event with movement and sound by means of drum-roll where the sound flowed up and down between the two spaces.
Set up and performance:
A snare-drum was placed on a stand in the middle of each space, in other words: the one exactly above the other. A microphone was attached to each drum and there was a panel of light emitting diodes on a second stand so that the total of both volumes was shown by means of mixing panel.
The work was performed by two drummers who had been asked to play an unbroken drum-roll for an hour so that their volume varied constantly. Their combined volume had to remain stable and could not go above or below a certain point.
When one drum was loud, the other was soft, and vice versa. Thus, there was a constant dialogue between the two drummers and the volume of their drums which flowed back and forth between the two spaces like moving waves of energy.
The installation existed for five consecutive days for one hour each day.
