Ringwave 3
Situation and plan:
I was asked by the Schouwburg (City Theater) in Tilburg to work for a while in and around the building during Mai, the Month of Art.
The examination of my ideas about space, movement and time, and the form and ground-plan of the City Theater resulted in the following thought:
The ground-plan shows a central point in the middle of the Main Hall and the Studio Hall underneath.
Curves (Arcs) are drawn from that point outwards for seats, galleries, outer wall etc.
On the outside, these curves approach us sharply but they are actually directed inwards: to what is happening in the Main Hall.
Based on that fact, my idea was to create from the same center, an outwards directed energy by means of a cycle-like movement in sound: a total of 24 hours of drum-roll divided over 24 days.
Set-up and performance:
I drew a circle on the ground-plan of the theater which took the middle of the hall (mentioned above) as its center.
The radius of the circle meant that it partly crossed spaces in the building and partly went around it in public space.
24 points were marked on the circle at equal distances.
Starting on 2nd May – the opening of the Month of Art -, at midday each day, an hour-long unbroken drum-roll was played on a snare-drum, starting on the next point of the circle.
The drum-roll began quietly each day at 11.30pm.
The drummer gradually increased the volume until it reached a high point at 12.00 p.m. and then decreased again until it ended in silence at 12.30pm.
The spaces in which the work was performed remained as much as possible in use but were open to the public for that hour.
