Ringwave 2
I made a work that could be performed in various spaces for “The Source of Inspiration”, a traveling
exhibition organized by the Dordrecht Kunstuitleen.
Set-up and performance:
A circle had been traced on the floor of the space with a diameter of six meters which had been marked with numbers in twelve places.
I stood on the circle at the first mark, 0, carrying a snare-drum on a strap and a stopwatch.
I began to play a drum-roll as evenly as possible while I moved around the circle extremely slowly.
As I approached the other side – in other words: the opposite mark – I played the drum-roll more loudly. The volume was at its loudest when I arrived at that mark and from that point on it decreased.
I covered this ring in a defined duration of time. The next ring was exactly the same, but the duration was shorter and the points of highest and lowest volume coincided with the next mark on the circle.
Hence, each ring was shorter in duration and the points of highest and lowest volume shifted around the circle.
The times varied enormously: The first ring was covered in five minutes and the middle one in 30 seconds. The ring following the sixth one became longer again and the point of highest volume shifted round until it again ended with the quiet sound at the place where it had also begun. The wave of sound had then revolved twelve times while the point of highest volume had revolved around the circle once.
