Rolling 2
The upstairs hall of De Lantaren building offers a broad panorama of the city's rooftops.
When the windows are open, the street sounds pervade the space.
I wanted to create an installation as a constant dialogue between the sounds of the city and the mental and physical energy of two drummers who played uninterrupted rolls on two drums.
Technical installation and performance:
The hall windows were opened, the only source of light was the illumination of the building's facade which shone through the window frames.
Two drummers stood in the middle of the space with snare-drums on stands. Between them was small cupboard with two rows of lamps which lit up with a sound signal. One row showed the volume of the city sounds by means of a microphone positioned on the roof of the building.
The other showed the volume of the drum roll.
The drummers had been asked to use these signals so that their drum rolls became softer the louder the sounds of the city became, and vice versa.
The installation was put on for two evenings between 8pm and 12 p.m. without a break.
A total of four drummers alternated with each other.
Visitors who spent some time around the open windows could experience the balance between the energies of outdoors and inside.
