Wall 2
Taken from 'Balance 3' an installation from the Kruidentuinproject in Delft '83, where four steel plates, each balanced by one person, were erected in the space provided (see documentation). This developed almost immediately into the idea of using the long space of the Apollohuis in Eindhoven to place two plates balanced in a continuous line, so that the slightest movement of one would register on the other.
The Apollohuis space is 20 meters long, 6 meters wide and 2.25 meters high, so that the installation formed a new wall, being a kind of continuation of my 1982 'Wall' production.
Performance:
Two steel plates (measurements: 6000 x 1250 x 8 mm, weight: 480 kg) are placed in a continuous line along the diameter of the space. These plates are each balanced by one person for an hour. Because of the balance needs continuous small corrections, the point where the plates meet is subject to constant small changes.
Publication:
A second publication by Toine Horvers titled 'Wall 2' was issued for this installation at the Apollohuis in an edition of thirty signed copies. It consists of two cassette cases: one containing a book of photographs, the other an audio cassette.
The book contains 30 photographs taken one every minute for half an hour by a camera fixed vertically above the junction of the steel plates. Because they have been printed life-size the true dimensions of deflection can be seen. The half-hour sound recording has been made with contact microphones and the sound reproduces the movement of the steel plates.
