Balance 4
Situation:
The exhibition-room of the Gele Rijder has a U-form. Both endings of it are on the road-side. One ending of the room lets in the daylight through an entrance-door with glass and windows, while the other ending is limited by a blind wall, thus making that part of the room stay dark.
From the one end to the other I have marked a path of 1.50 meters wide on the floor with tape. Near the blind wall, at the end of the path, I have put quantity of white chalk-powder on the floor, and near the window-side I have put a same quantity of soot.
In the middle of the room there is metronome, which marks the shole seconds. During the performance I am dressed in gray.
Performance:
During the opening-hours of the Gele Rijder – 4 days per week from 14.00 – 18.00 p.m. - so altogether during 16 hours I move every second with a small step sideways between the endings of the U-form, again and again taking chalk and soot with me under my shoe-soles.
I shift my paths in such a way, that the whole are between the marked lines is walked on. As time goes by, soot and chalk are spreading along and a kind of average gray arose in the area of the room where light and dark too gradually turn into each other.
