Rite 3 is based on the five phases in the cycle of light of one day: night, dawn, daylight, dusk and night. For each of these phases composer Joop Voorn has written a melody to lyrics by Dick van Teylingen. For an hour long they are repeatedly sung by various groups of singers from the Rotterdam’s chamber choir Cappella Gabrieli led by Maarten Michielsen. Due to differences in the starting points of each group, the melodies begin to overlap each other irregularly and form a sound texture that builds up in the space. The only lighting in the space is that which enters through the windows from outside. The church is open to the public during performances. Rite 3 is financially supported by Dienst Kunst en Cultuur Rotterdam, Fonds Stichting Bevordering Volkskracht and Stichting Laurenskerk. Read and see more: rite |
